My work is inspired by and investigates nature and the natural world and the role of the seasons within our lives. It reflects on nature as ritual and a spiritual practice, witchcraft, motherhood, feminism and femininity, the place of beauty and craft in the contemporary art world, and past societies and ways of thinking. I am interested in the process of drawing as a form of meditation and walking and collecting objects as a pilgrimage.
I walk in landscapes and explore natural patterns, lichens, mosses, barks and seaweeds. I collect rocks, plants, photographs, sketches and audio field recordings and use these to create installations. I have recently begun experimenting with weaving, quilting and ceramics – historic crafts that can be used to hold stories and display intricate patterns.
When I draw, I imagine the patterns I have seen on my walks, and I often draw from memory. I like to think of it like the drawing is growing across the page. And it could represent patterns of a map or strata in a giant rock face, or the small branches of lichens or seed formations. When drawing this automatic process helps me to centre and slow my thoughts. Some of the techniques I use are learnt from carrying out a course in Art Psychotherapist training, and I am interested in the relationship between creating and wellbeing and using my art as a tool to connect with deeper thoughts and feelings.
Whilst exploring in nature and making and arranging my installations, I am also searching for a connection to past women, witchcraft and motherhood. I see my installations and arrangements as offerings to the natural world, and I imagine I am recreating past forgotten rituals. I am fascinated by the history of witchcraft and long for the feminine knowledge lost. I also contemplate the meaning of being a woman who isn’t a mother, and how motherhood is represented in stories. I am also passionate about protecting and documenting nature in a world where it has been de-centred from our lives and the natural world is under threat.
I studied Fine Art (BA) at University of the Arts London, Chelsea College of Arts in 2010, and Art Gallery and Museum Studies, Digital Curation and Creative Education (MA) at The University of Manchester in 2012. In 2024, I carried out a course in Art Psychotherapy at Glasgow University, and Creative Ceramics at Glasgow Clyde College. I have been working as a communications and marketing professional in the cultural sector for the last 15 years for organisations such as New Contemporaries, Camden Arts Centre, South London Gallery and The National Lottery Heritage Fund, and I have recently reinvigorated my art practice since moving to Glasgow in 2024. I have a studio space at David Dale Gallery and Studios, and I am a studio member at Squeeze Print Studio, Govan.
